Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Hello! All! Hope those who had joined my groups arent disappointed in any way.

Of course, business is not too good when the VIP, 'Woodstock' wasnt as enthusiastic as the others. You break my 'little' heart, Woodstock! Well, cant blame you as you seem to be getting lazy each day. I could send you cartons of red wine to shake you up. Would you like that?

A serious reminder. Those groups provided are from the sincererity of my heart to die-hard fans of Anita. The additional piece of Urami Bushi[Kill Bill] n a couple of Momoe's songs is an introduction of good music too.

What! How can 'Ice Mountain Big Fire' be known as 'Rock n Roll Widow' in japanese? Just look at the difference of each meaning. Theres no connection at all! Are you pulling my leg, Woodstock? And what abt the 1st two? Anyway, thanks for providing me the japanese names for those songs. Could you please give us the link to Sammi's for our sweet n kind June? Hopefully they still have the MV, if not I may need permission for the upload.

Im truly sorry abt your situation, June. Could you please give it a couple more trys? If you still have the same problem, do let me know, ok?
That mandarin number 'awaiting you' is kind of soulful but I like it. Cant help thinking of Anita whenever it is playing. So sad..

Angel, did you think I was joking? Leslie did sing 'rouge'. Did you manage to download it? What do you think of Momoe's version?

To all members, heartfelt thanks from Anita, Momoe, Leslie, AndyL.. etc.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Dana: Here are Japanese titles. “Day and Night Remember” is “I Came from Yokosuka” and “No Need to Think about Me” is “Imitation Gold.” Those two songs are in Anita’s first album (only six songs of her and other singer’s songs) “Heart Debt.” I think they needed songs for album, so they just garbed other Momoe’s songs. Anita seemed be rather timid to sing them. You wrote [How can ‘Ice Mountain Big Fire’ be known as ‘Rocn n Roll Widow’ in Japanese?] I thought exactly opposite. “Manjushaka” is Momoe’s best singing. If I compare Momoe’s singing to Anita’s, it is difficult to say which is better. As always you can say that when Anita sings on live, the song has more meaning and emotion. But be sure, when Momoe sang those songs, she was more or less eighteen. Momoe project team members were very care about her and best people at that time. They produced several “total concept albums.” If Anita had those kinds of people for her brain, she would be no limited her singing career. By the way, Woodstock, your Japanese is very good. Did your Japanese friend teach you?

Dana, Anita sang many Japanese songs. The famous ones among them are “Sunset Song,” “Dream Partner” and “Love Captain 愛 将” from Masahiko, Machy, Kondo. Anita sang much better than Machy. You knew his name, right? By the way, I read that Pricila Chan or some female singer also coverd “Sunset Song” in a different title. How is that?

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Thank you, June and Angel for letting know Priscilla Chan's song. Since I have not gotton TVB Jade awards VCD, I have no idea that they were both in 10 best songs. I am curious about the lyrics of the song. Is ti the same? The title of the song is different, so it must be entirely different.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Hi Angel! Well? Are you still having the same problem? If you still do, I could email you my password n ID. Do let me know.

My dear Woodstock, I truly hope the both of us will not end up in an institution in the long run. To ensure that we dont, I had better start my meditation again n so do you.

Im trying to be more serious here but ..I cant concentrate, Woodstock, I cant help it when I thought of what Angel suggested in the other thread ...

Are you using the ancient japanese style of writing, Woodstock? I dont understand at all!!! PLEASE Woodstock, must you torture me? AT, can you help me?

Thank goodness! At last I get to hear some good news from you, June. Im happy for you. Thats right, both Anita/Momoe are just GREAT! Yea..'Awaiting For You' is indeed very beautiful, I hope Angel get to listen to it too.

Hello! AT! Thank you so much for helping me out. Really appreciate the extra info of all those songs of Anita. The song 'I Came From Yokosuka', is it the same as 'Yokosuka Story'?
It is somewhat depressing to know that most of the songs performed by Anita were not her originals. Why is that so? Youve mentioned that Anita seemed rather timid to sing them. Is it because she was considered a newcomer, that she had no choice but to bend accordingly to whatever her projecting team suggested?
Momoe is sure lucky to have such a dedicated team to help her when she first started.

Guess Anita's success is solely based on her own hard work n determination. Oh! AT Im getting emotional again. Just imagine, through all those 40 years, when she could get to enjoy the fruits of her own labour, her life is taken away n in such a painful way.

Its a pity both werent given a chance to perform together on stage or at least recorded a song together, which I think could be a great sell-out n a boost to their career.

Yep.. there shouldnt be any comparison between Anita & Momoe's singing. Both had their unique style inspired by their own experiences n exposure in the entertainment industry. Both are true professionals.

I just love 'Manjushaka'. May it be Anita/Momoe, I could never stop listening to it. Actually, till now I still have no idea what is 'Manjushaka' Could you enlighten me,AT?

I hope my theory is logical here. 'Ice Mountain Big Fire'..does it refers to Mt. Fuji? It is supposed to be a dormant volcano but then some geological changes occurs from within n 'BOOM' the volcano erupts, thats how the 'big fire' comeabout, right?
As for 'Rock n Roll Widow', I still cant find a solution. Could anyone 'rock n roll' when the other half is dead? Maybe the 'widow' could be refering to Mt. Fuji. 'widow' rock[explode] n roll[melted rock, gas, steam n ash rushing out]

I noticed that the english title of Anita's songs are pretty weird, though.

Honestly, I really dont know who is Priscilla Chan. Anita Mui was the only Asian Star that Ive started to notice n admired. Thank you June, Angel n Jack for your informations n Thank you AT, for bringing it up, giving me a chance to check out her version of 'sunset melody'.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Dana, rock & roll widow is just an expression, you say "**** widow" when the guy or girl is so busy doing **** that they aren't around for the other person, as if they were dead; like "football widow", the guy is always watching games every second. Rock & roll widow, the guy might be gone always on tour.

Is Manjushaka a person's name? Because it's not translated from Japanese to Chinese. Did Anita introduce the Japanese songs to the Hong Kong community, or was the Momoe version already popular?

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Jack, June and Angel: Thank you very much for verifying Priscilla Chan version of “Sunset Song.” She is not a bad singer. But to me, “Sunset Song” is always associated with the movie “Better Tomorrow III”: the theme song. This movie is prequel of “Better Tomorrow” series and Anita is very, very stylish and cool. If you have not seen it, please watch it. My friend in Japan told me that at the time Machy, the original singer, sang it, it was not a hit, but since “Sunset Song” was a big hit in Hong Kong, it became popular in Japan later.

Thank you FB for explaining of ‘widow.’ Yes, this is the same as ‘baseball widow’ or ‘basketball widow.’

Dana: “Rock n Roll Widow” is about a wife of a rock n roller who is fooling around all the time. He uses music (rock n roll) to be popular. So it is nothing to do with a Volcano. When songs are covered, sometimes, lyrics are completely different. Sometime, they take an essence of a song to write similar meaning of lyrics.
No, “Yokosuka Story” is a Momoe’s turning point song in her career. “I Came from Yokosuka” is a song from one of her albums. Momoe grew up in Yokosuka where used be one of the US bases in Japan.
Not only Anita but also other singers covered a lot of Japanese songs as well as western songs. That was a trend in early 80’s in Hong Kong. I have Leslie Cheung’s memorial CD sets. Almost half of his early hit songs are originally Japanese songs. Please read Ming Pao Weekly #1965. http://archives.mui-mui.org/ming1695.htm I asked Woodstock to translate Florence Chan’s articles because we can understand some back ground of Anita’s early career. I am not a Hong Kong music critic but my understanding, as a movie reporter, about early 80’s in show business in HK is that there was a big movement of using Cantonese in movies and songs in late 70’s. I do not want to go detail. So roughly in 50’s Cantonese was mainly used in movies and (I think) songs. In 60’s Mandarin was mostly used in movies, at the same time English songs were very popular as well as Mandarin songs. Then late 70’s Micheal *** starred in a Cantonese comedy and his younger brother, Samuel *** sang songs in Cantonese. Since then movies were produced in Cantonese and later dubbed in Mandarin (market for Taiwan and Southeast Asia), and so-called Canto-Pops became very popular in Chinese communities. Although they needed a lot of new songs, there were a few composers in Hong Kong. So they began to cover Japanese songs a lot until early 90’s.

Remember, Momoe retired in October, 1980. Anita’s debut was in 1982. It was impossible that they sang a duet. But I saw a part of clip that Anita sang “Dream Partner” in Japanese with Masahiko Kondo in a TVB program. I wish I can have that video. In an old interview Anita said she talked to Momoe on phone when she was in Japan.

Manjushaka is a name of a flower. Usually we pronounce it Manjushage rather than Manjushaka. It has another name: Higan bana. Its bloom is crimson, very poisonous but its stem is one of medical herbs. If I break the word, “hana/bana” means flower and “higan” is a short form of “paramita” in Sanskrit, means the state of spiritual awakening. I think Manjushaka is used as a metaphor of passion because of crimson bloom in Momoe song. That passion is not a bright sunlight type of passion but subtle, wet, jealousy type of passion (to me).

I think I know what you mean, but please do not mention weird English or English titles. Those English titles are not used among Chinese people. I think they are only for non-Chinese speakers for some convenience to communicate. It is like a sign. I had an experience that when I talk to people, I should say actor’s name and movie’s title in Cantonese in Hong Kong. In a CD shop, I can say Anita Mui and usually they understand me. However, I mention Anita Mui to, let’s say, a waitress in a dinner, she dose not understand who I am talking about. I have to say Mui Yim Fong. When I look for a specific thing, I write it in Chinese to ask for. I am glad that I can write it. Also, I know that I do not write/speak grammatically correct English. That is why I have not posted. But I got frustrated because I did not have Anita fans around me. So here I am.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

My ignorance of 'rock n roll widow' is quite an embarrassment. My thanks to FB & AT for explaining to me.

Yep..AT I did read the article 'ming 1695' but I couldnt understand why you suggested that Anita seemed timid in singing those songs. I really enjoyed reading what youve explained, so thoroughly from the early 50s to the early 90s, how canto-pop was introduced. It is interesting & something new to me as I only exist in the late 80s. Thank you!

You did mentioned Momoe's retirement in Oct 1980 in the 'Momoe thread' but nothing is impossible if they were given a chance, I suppose...like the recent news of some retired artistes making a return..

Thank you so much AT, at least now I know what Manjushaka means. Such an exotic flower with an unusual link to the great mantra, The Mahaprajnapramitra. Thank you for the links, FB.

So thats how those english names for those songs were created. I was confused.

AT, no matter how weak a person can be, in speaking/in writing, in other languages as well, one has the willingness to communicate is much to be appreciated. All of us are truly grateful & happy that you are here with us in this wonderful site of Anita, under the distinctive management of Woodstock & Snoopy!

Angel, pls dont runaway, could you provide the english lyrics of Anita's Manjushaka? Please? Please? I need it badly ...

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Dana: Sorry to delay replying you. You won’t let me go my little comment about Anita’s singing. I guess I was wrong to use the word ‘timid.’ Anita’s debut song “Heart Debt” is a TV drama theme. Singing a theme song is a fast way to get popularity in Hong Kong. The record company wants to profit from it. When Anita released “Heart Debt” album in August 1982, it was just one month later she won the singing contest. It was obvious they made the album as fast as they could. That was why only one side of the album, six songs, was sung by Anita. Four of six songs were Japanese cover songs. Two songs were Momoe’s. “Imitation Gold” is one of her memorable songs. It is about her current boy friend. She compares him with her previous boyfriend. You can guess “Imitation Gold” means. Her current boyfriend is less or not as good as a previous one. Momoe sang this mature woman’s point of view about a boyfriend when she was eighteen years old. When I heard Anita’s “No Need to Think about Me,” it was a completely different feeling I had about the song. Anita’s voice was so cute. I do not know the meaning of its lyrics in Chinese, so my impression that Anita sang it timidly may be wrong.

Momoe will not return to show business. I heard that she dose not like to get media’s attention anymore. Her songs are still popular after more than 20 years of retirement. She was asked to comeback many times but it will not happen.

You do have a point there abt Angel, Woodstock n I did enjoy the dinner party. Thank you.

Angel, could you please provide the english lyrics of Momoe's Manjushaka? I really, really need it badly, more than before. Please..Please..alsjeblieft? ...

June, you are certaintly having a ball! More downloads for fellow members at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AnitaM_yamaguchiM4
Youve got to listen to this one in mandarin 'A,Girl Red Wine',June, it is couldnt describe it! Added 'Rose, Rose I Love You' in group1 n a new one in group3. Did you watch 'Miracles', June, Angel, Woodstock? Oh! boy! was she manhandled by JackyC. But was funny though!
You know what, June those 'alien' symbols are driving me nuts. I couldnt remember if I have upload a song twice. Forgive me, if I did..yea? Have you heard the song 'Jungle2'? Hence, I dont have to upload it, ok? I had no idea what year/name of that song, too!

Dont worry abt it, AT. My patience has long been tested to the limit by Woodstock. But occasionally, I do have this feeling.
I dont mean to chase after you too, AT just that I couldnt help wondering why 'timid'. Yep..definitely 'cute' is the word. Thank you.

Guess Momoe prefers to dedicate her time to her family. A good decision but certaintly a big loss to all who love her songs. I am one of them, AT. Thank you so much for your explanation.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Dana: I tried to translate Manjushaka from the Japanese lyrics.

[Manjushaka]
To know there is sorrow draws no tears
Just recently
To feel heavy somehow happiness with no shape
Yes, recently
A letter to you
Cannot come up with the last sentence
Where should I draw the line to end
When flowers beside a window blossoms
When flower blooms fell vainly
No, when I am loved by you
Manjushaka
A woman who in love
Manjushaka
Is sinful
That dyes even a white flower crimson

Waiting earnestly a promise that cannot count on
Yes, even now
Chasing earnestly tenderness that cannot express with words
Yes, even now
Feeling to you
How far should I go to stop
Cannot manage myself
When flowers on a desk rustle
When flowers are fragrant faintly
No, when I am loved by you
Manjushaka
A woman who is in love
Manjushaka
Is sinful
That burns everything of the entire life

Manjushaka
A woman who is in love
Manjushaka
Is sinful
That dyes even a white dream crimson

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

I think Andrey is right, because in the rule of voting, it is clearly stated you can only vote the particular song once a week, so total 52 votes for it per annum.

So what you girls are doing? Vote and request songs at the same time?

For requesting songs, I think if we can decide and agree which song we will request for certain day or week, then the chances of getting that song played will be greater. Otherwise our request will be too scattered, unless we are allowed to request all songs everyday again.

Anyway, let me know about your decision.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Hi Woodstock and All!!
Actually when I first started voting at hkvp, I really tried to follow there instructions of voting for the songs i love once a week although I tried to vote the following day, they really did not accept it...but lately, when I did vote again and tried to vote again the following day the system finally accepted...so I guess they have loosen there policy or as what Audrey also pointed out maybe they just accept, accept and accept votes on a daily basis but the ranking and the posting is done weekly.
Your understanding on there voting policies is correct, but anyway, no harm done if we would deviate from it and vote daily since there system is accepting it now Again happy voting to all!

Is there a part that you can see how many votes that there are or is it only that you can see when you added a vote ? And how can you see the others are voting against the singer ?

I requested a song only 2 times, you need to wait untill they have played your song, than they would accept your request again and they will confirm with you when and where they would play the song.
So, Woodstock, do you mean that we request the same song together but what about the time and country ?

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Hi Angel! To your question on how to see the number of votes for that particular song, yes you are correct, you can only see it when you vote and after a summary is given to you.
As for knowing that there are people voting against the song of an artist, when the summary page has a negative sign, like for this morning I voted against the songs of a female singer, right after I submitted my against votes, I was given a summary of it and then there's -1 or -2, depending how many people voted against that particular song. and have a good day to you!

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

They are two different songs. 'Break Open the Iceberg' is a covered version of 'In the heat of the Night' (by Sandra) and was collected in the 'Witch' album. 'Ice Mountain Big Fire' is a covered version of a Japanese song and collected in the 'Bad Girl' album. It had been used as a theme song in a lemon tea advertisement in the 80's.

Hi ana! Yes, please do continue voting for all of her songs everyday. But if you say, you used netscape and use another account name to request a song and it accepted then it's great! June :

[you are right it's in the Moonlight before bed album, but I need to correct you it's in track #6, and not #2.]

You know it is getting more , "The Red Wine" is track #2 in that album, how it became #6 in your album. #6 should be "Nail in the eye"? Are we talking about the same song

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Hi Woodstock and good evening to you!! Okey it's like this, actually I do not know the English title of the songs in most of Anita's albums especially the ones in Mandarin. For the Red Wine song, I only referred to what Dana has written and to what I have heard while listening to it. The song Dana has written as Girl Red Wine is the same song as in track #6 in the Moonlight before Bed album...so I guess, we know now whose blunder is it....right?

Hi! ana!! Thanks for sharing the ff links, most of the links are still working except for around 4, which says cannot be found. A nice memorabilia! But it could have been more better if the events were recorded and released in VCD/DVD Don't you think so??

Woodstock were you there at the Viva Anita Fan Club Party in 1996?? The pictures are not of good quality, but I see Anita sporting a white or a grey hair?? Is it? Do you know Joekwong? Thanks in advance for your reply

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

June, I don't know joekwong, but I saw the vedio of that party before. Mui was very high. BTW, in the pictures of the farewell concert, he mentioned Mui shook hands a lot with the audience at the back of the stage. I was sitting at the first row at that back section, so I shook hands with Mui many many times . But it's a pity I didn't have a camera with me . Anyway, if I had a camera, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the concert fully.

Also about the song "Red Wine" (in case you don't know, the name of that song is the name of a red wine). If the Queen of Blunder said "Not me, I supposed." Then it might be you and me? But you know better it's not us.

Hi ana! I did not say anything Of course, as always, even with your blunders, I'll stand by you I'd liked to believe that Woodstock didn't try to check your group, so I guess, I just have to answer for your question dear...yes, the title of the song that you have written as Girl Red Wine, is not actually that song, as Woodstock mentioned the title should be "Nail in the Eye"...So kindly do the necessary correction dear okey?

And yeah you are right, Anita's legs are gorgeous and it's really to die for

Woodstock, thanks for the added info you gave regarding the song and the concert....yeah looking at the pictures, Anita did bring the place down as always with her superb performance

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

ana good day to you!! I only get to download one voice clip, the one that lasted for 1 min. I asked help from my friend for the translation Here it is: Anita said in her previous concerts she would normally talked to her audience after she get to sing 1 to 2 songs, but with this concert of hers(don't know what concert is this cause no mention)it will be somewhat different cause all she wanted is to just sing and perform for her audience, that's why if you noticed I din't talk too much, sorry about that, just watch and appreciate my performance...is okey.

With regards to the meaning of the "Nail in the Eye" of the song. When we say, nail in the eye, it means obstruction in the eye. And once our eyes are obstructed, the initial reaction is to remove it, so that we could see clearly. The meaning is used similarly in the song, Anita is talking about how she is a nail in the eye of a man, the man who wishes her to be out of his life, but despite of this, she is still there for him. Such a sad song

..funny Woodstock. I bet June prefer the 'girl red wine'. Me too! Woodstock, I saw the cheongsam in those pictures, which Anita was wearing. Yea..very pretty..just like the one in 2002gig. Now that Ive seen those 99pictures, I know why it was considered provocative

Thank you so much, June, appreciate your explanation. Any chance for me to read abt the other voice clip? Please? Yea..such a sad, sad song. I rather leave than be the nail. What abt you, June?

You are welcome! Angel. The above is an english site, Angel. Angel, dont you think its weird, Woodstock asking ME??? to translate those chinese interviews? Hey! Woodstock, June is great, too..yea..June n Angel could help you too.

Re: Are you curious? Better hurry then..

Hi ana I'm back with the translation for the other voice clip. The second voice clip was recorded during her 1991 farewell concert, as she is trying to tell to the audience her reasons for saying goodbye to the stage. She cited so many reasons:
1. For so many years she's been wearing a strong mask, meaning she appears to be so tough on the outside. Being the big sis that she is and the superstar status that she has acquired. She feels that it's now time to mellow down and to start a new life....

2. She wants to settle down and start a family of her own.

3. If no husband, then maybe at least a boyfriend that won't be intimidated by her status.

4. She feels exhausted/tired and wants to have a breather.

Dana so far, that's the whole picture of her voice clip, I hope you are now satisfied...and can have a good night sleep, as I needed one too
No need to thank me, I'm happy doing it for you

Angel, you always say nice things for Woodstock. Cant blame you, though, she is indeed a very nice person. Yea.. I do know she loves me in a weird way though, dont you notice, she addressed me a n now even calls me mei..Im ..

Hi! June, you are fast!!! Well, even if you dont need my thanks, I still WANT to say 'Thank you so much, June'!

Judging from her announcement, she has indeed overworked herself as always in order to please everyone. Before she embraced buddhism, behind those smiles n laughter, was a very sad person. In a way fate wasnt for her to decide..

[Devi]ana: I you too! You can withstand , all sorts of attacks, but Angel is just too week a person. Guess you know what I meant.

However, I feel you are getting more mature since I have known you in this forum. I once read something like "the best comedian might have the saddest life story of his own." So he can understand the suffering and unhappiness of the people around him, and then tries his best to make people happy and to cheer them up
