Hi June & Woodstock, thank you for your info. I'll check them out again next week. June, thanks for your solo. Have you picked any song yet? Perhaps I've to do pinyin for songs with a faster tempo such as 烈焰紅唇 (Blazing Red Lips), 似火探戈 (Fire Tango),黑夜的豹(The Night Panther) etc.

Hey June, don't forget to include the song from Dance of a Dream (Father & Son), I have already done the pinyin (I kept my promise to do it by the weekend!) and have sent it to Woodstock for her to upload. Since this is such a nice and jovial song, perhaps we can all sing together???

West Side Story This film came out in 1961. It is the Romeo and Juliet story set in contemporary New York with the Puerto Rican Spanish gang vs. the white guys' gang, and the romance is between Tony and Maria (played by Natalie Wood). But the most interesting female character is Maria's friend Anita. Rita Moreno plays the role of Anita. She is the best dancer, she has a fiery bold personality with snappy dramatic speech, has big hair and dangling earrings, she tosses her head and turns and struts like a proud rooster. Does this sound like anyone we know? All my life before Mui came along, when I heard the name Anita I would think of the character in West Side Story, because Anita is not that common an English name, although it is a common Spanish name. I haven't watched this film in many years, but when I saw "Yuen Fun" (Behind the Yellow Line) something made me think of West Side Story, and I watched it again. So my question is, was this film very popular in Hong Kong/Japan/Asia? During what years? Mui would have been a small child then. It brings a big smile to my face to think of a very small girl, who has a great talent for show business, watching this film in the theater with big eyes, and growing up to become "Anita" herself. I grabbed some screenshots from the film and put them together in a collage, and another of Rita Moreno. The B&W shots are from the premier (wearing cheongsam, fascinating!), receiving her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; the color shots here are just a couple of years old. She is 72 now! Photos are in the http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/mui99concert_2/ Photos -->westsidestory Since it's kind of off topic, I'll take the photos down after a while. |

Guess this film is too old for young fans in this forum, or they are afraid to be thought being grandpa or grandma if they admit they have seen this film. I don't know when this film was first shown in HK, but I saw that film on TV, and also I bought a DVD together with Gone with the Wind, Rebel without a cause and some other good movies recently just for my collection. All these big cast Hollywood films are very popular in HK, most of us, I think people over 30 or 40 have watched them. In fact, Gone with the Wind has just been shown here in cinema again. Natalie Wood is my favorite Hollywood actress of middle age group, (my old age group favorites are Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, and Ingrid Bergman , my young age group are Julia Roberts, and Meg Ryan. Recently fell in love with Sophie Marceau ). Right after Mui revealed that she wanted to have a musical, I immediately thought Maria of the West Side story for her, and also Evita too. Mui liked to convert "Rouge" into musical, but I feel it is too sad, too slow for a musical. However, to my disappointment, I found later West side story had been played as a musical or stage show in HK already. (I don't know who did it, because I never pay attention to anybody except Mui.) Anyway, don't have to worry what Mui should play for her musical anymore. Maybe someday, someone should make her life story to a musical, then it will be more interesting. |

Woodstock, Agree with you. Wonderful idea if Mui's story can be turned into a musical. Her life is dramatic and fruitful enough to make a good show. Just wonder who can play her role , that's a big problem. |

Angel to answer your question I thought of WSS early in the film when Mui first appeared on the train and was teasing Leslie, it was such a shock seeing her so young, right after watching the Classic Moment concert. The way she had her hair and makeup, and her bold attitude reminded me of the look of the Spanish and Mexican girl gangs in the US, and of course the name Anita, same as the character in WSS. (I keep forgetting that Chinese people don't think of her as Anita at all, but Yim-Fong, so they might never think of this.) The next day I rented the WSS DVD and watched it thinking of how it would seem to a 3 or 4 year old Mui, the wild dancing and music. Mui has always had a Spanish side to her personality, she performs Spanish songs and has that style of costume, the best example is her twin sister character in "Saviour of the Soul" w/ Andy Lau & Kenny Bee; I can't help wondering if this, and her choice of the name 'Anita' could have come from early exposure to WSS. Actually saying 'Spanish' like this is really, really wrong, because there are so many cultures, the Flamenco guitar music & dancing, and bullfighter stuff is from Spain, tango music is from Argentina, the songs by Ernesto Lecuona that she performs are from Cuba, the girl gang mascara & hair look is from LA & New York. LA is Mexican, New York is Puerto Rican. Rita Moreno who played 'Anita' in WSS is actually Puerto Rican from New York, unlike Natalie Wood. Anita Mui seems to have this unique ability to remind me of women in my past life (or lives) who may not look anything like her, and are not necessarily Asian. Three new ones came out of the Classic Moment show, when she had on the colorful sun-dress, she reminded me of the object of every boy's lust when we were kids, Dick Van Dyke's wife Laura, (comedy from early days of television) http://tvland.classictvhits.com/DickVanDyke/Pics/DVD12.gif That's a very young Mary Tyler Moore!! Next example: Ronnie Spector http://www.history-of-rock.com/ronettes.htm There's another example from Classic Moment when she is in the reddish wig with straight hair & bangs; she looks German for some reason, I can't spot exactly who she looks like. I was looking through Nina Hagen photos, but no, it's someone else. Then again, I might actually be going nuts. I'm going to join the crowd lined up outside the door of Dana's doctor friend's office! |

Really not necessary to go through the trouble "going to join the crowd lined up outside the door of Dana's doctor friend's office!" We can offer sessions of group therapy here in this forum, all of us are therapists. cc: sometimes I think it is too difficult to put Mui's life story onto the stage, because really too many things happened in her life of 40 years. Even all things she did in 2003 could not be detailed enough if shortened into a 3 hour script. |

Woodstock, Still wish it can happen one day. Like Evita, if there is a similar musical for Anita which can last for yrs will be great. Not easy here at all. |

Now comes the weird part of this story: When I was doing research on the web after seeing WSS I discovered that Rita Moreno lives only a couple of miles from my house! And she still performs, she is right now performing in a stage play. So of course I had to go, it was last night. The play is called "Master Class", it's about the legendary classical opera singer Maria Callas, who is famous for bringing the tragic drama of the characters she is playing into her vocal performance. She was married to the rich and famous Aristotle Onassis before he was married to Jackie Kennedy. http://www.callas.it/framehome-e.html The play was all about singing and performance and relates to Mui in many ways. A very creative person could change this play into the sort of musical you are discussing. Read about it here while I go to work. http://www.culturevulture.net/Theater6/MasterClass.htm |

Anita Mu was superb in A Better Tomorrow 3 I remember as a little child (1980s) listening to some of her songs while growing up in a Chinese household in the USA. Her voice/pitch was absolutely stellar and rich. I was still a child so I didn't know the names of her songs. I only recall my mother and older siblings refering to her as "Mui Yim Fong" and that she became well-known in the Chinese community. ...And now I'm older (23 to be exact) and now have this infatuation about Anita. It started as a result of watching the "A Better Tomorrow" series. (If you have never seen "A Better Tomorrow 1,2 & 3", I suggest you go see it in that order. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it.) Well anyway, Anita stars in part 3 which sets in the 1970s during the fall of Saigon. There's a part in the movie where they play one of Anita's most popular songs. It immediately took me back as a child when I originally heard it. What was the name of Anita's song in "A Better Tomorrow 3"? BTW, Anita was great in "ABT3" throughout and she fit the role well. "ABT3" wasn't as action packed as 1 & 2, but I liked what they decided to do in terms of the authenticity of using the 1970s political/military upheaval in Asia. I'm glad they didn't decide to go the route of making part 3 like 1,2. Well, if anyone could tell me Anita's song in "A Better Tomorrow 3", I would be very grateful. I will never forget Anita Mui. I still play that song in my mind right now. Kam Wing |

Yes, I definitely agree that Anita's acting in the film was superb! The name of the song is Xi Yang Zhi Ge or The Song of Dusk (if u translate song name to English). Anita sang this song wearing a wedding gown in her final concert. This song was also in her 2002 Fantasy Gig concert. This song also won the Golden Song award in the 1990 Jade Solid Gold Awards Presentation. |

YC, if I'm not mistaken, the year was 1989. Cause in the year 1990 Anita did not participate anymore in the awards. |

Prayers for Anita - BUDI CENTRE Hi All, Anita's name has appeared in BUDI CENTER, a small temple located at No 63, Geylang Lor 4 Singapore 399300. Tel 6745 8984. Look for tablet no. 0284. This temple is beside Geylang Lor 6. It is hidden behind the highway construction but if your car or transport enters Lor 6 via Mountbatten Road towards Gullimard Rd, you can see the temple on the left hand side of Lor 6, just beside the road at the corner. If you enter via the main Geylang Road, you'll be in for a shock...very hard to find. It is quite remote to walk in as there are many foreign worker lodgings. Girls, don't walk alone ! Di Zhang Jing chanting from 15.Aug thru 5.Sep at 8pm every night makes this an ideal choice. Alternatively, you can also visit Golden Pagoda Temple at 798 Tampines Rd Singapore 518475 to offer your prayers and blessings. Tablet No. 13896. This is a more famous temple and will be much easier to access by public transport. Hope this information is useful. Pls remember - Don't bring any alcohol, meat etc ...it's a temple. I am so happy to know so many that still remember and love Anita and I know she will be very happy to feel the power of prayers and our blessings for her and everytime her name appears in a temple means a donation is made, Gong De Wu Liang ! God Bless! Cheers |

Love the pinyin; ideas for
website: First, thank you Angel and others for the pinyin lyrics. I had "Rouge" playing in my head and could read and whisper the words and recognize the same words Anita was singing coming from my own mouth. Wow! I felt like when I was in 2nd grade and began reading my first book! Now, I will tell you my plans for a web page(s) to organize Anita's songs. I'm not insisting that Woodstock/Snoopy do this right away, someone else could, I'd do it if I had the language skills and knew HTML, but I don't. I'll just describe the basic outline or skeleton form. See what you all think of this; it doesn't seem that hard. First page, Level 1: This would have a list of media with a small picture of the artwork, just like this page: http://www.anitarium.com/albums.html broken into categories: CD's, live concerts on video, films (only if the film contains a song) Each item appears as Level 2: Each CD/concert video/film has its own page. First, picture, and names as above. Second, a list of the tracks: Track number/song name (characters, pinyin, English (or other language, a few songs are originally Spanish) For films the song(s) in the film are listed. When you find a song you are interested in click on it and you will go to Level 3. Level 3: Each song has its own page, on this page are the following categories: 1) Name-- (Chinese characters, pinyin, English (which may have several versions (panther/leopard, iceberg/ice mountain, etc)) 2) Composer/lyricist/publisher info, running time, as listed on CD 3) List of all media (and track numbers) where this song appears, for example a song may be on original CD, compilation CD, film, and one or more live concert videos. This list is actually links, so clicking on the compilation CD for example will take you back to that compilation CD's page on Level 2. 3) Lyrics: Click on 'Lyrics' button would get the song lyrics: characters and pinyin. Clicking on a 'English' button would bring up an English translation is a new small window keeping the Chinese lyrics on the main screen. 4) Random Facts Section: Here is a place for interesting facts about the song; if it is a cover version of a foreign song, if it was used for a TV show, or film; if there is romantic gossip about Anita and the song, everything like this goes in this category. Now go back to the first page. Down the left-hand side is a narrow column with its own scroll-bar. This is the index. First, all the Chinese character names, next all the pinyin names, alphabetically, then all the English names alphabetically. Clicking on any name goes directly to the song in Level 3. Right now, myself and most westerners organize our knowledge of Anita's music by track number on a particular CD which we remember by its picture. What we don't have, and badly need, is Level 2 with its link to Level 3. For example, when you talk about "Nail in the eye" I have no clue as to what song this is, which CD to listen to to hear it; and most of the new pinyin lyrics coming in are this way, I only know the most common songs (Rouge, Fate, Sunset Song, Summer Lover, If I Were a Man). So if you want to know about a song, look it up with the index, and you will find out what CD's, which track it is, with one click. If you want to know "Do I want to buy this CD?" click on it's picture and find out which songs are included. If you want to know what the "Heroic Trio" theme is called, and which CD's have it, click on it's picture. The "Songs (Level 3) pages will load quickly because the lyrics don't load until you click the "Lyrics" button. The 'English' lyrics are in a separate small window so you can have them both on the screen at once for comparison and study. Us fans can gradually add to the Random Facts Sections for the songs as time goes on. Level 1 (Media) could have a supplementary section for private or non-commercial or temporary downloads, clips from awards where songs are performed, just to organize and keep a record that this performance exists (The '99 concert could be documented here), but the main Level 1 should be for commercial media, even if out of print. If it's out of print, say so in big red letters, maybe we can stimulate a re-issue. |

FB: I'm glad that you tell us you love the pinyin too. Otherwise we would think only a few girls are crazy about it. For the time being, the girls will only work for those requested songs, when we feel more people are looking for pinyin for other songs, we will try to set up website for all the songs. Will keep your suggestion in mind. Thank you! |

Addon to FB's suggestions, not sure if you guys like this layout, I personally find it very user-friendly. Not to promote Alan Tam's songs/website, just feel there is a good example for us to learn from. http://www.rickytong.com/atmdb/ For example, if I am looking for songs with Mui's duet or Mui took part, I can search by Mui's name, then it will return the list of songs I want. If I click on one of the song from a compilation album, it will also list out the list of albums that consists of the song & the versions.... try this song 擁抱 http://www.rickytong.com/atmdb/song.cfm?song_id=487 |

FB IP: 67.118.252.85 Aug 2nd, 2004 - 11:24 PM |
No, I'm not planning to actually sing these songs, my main reason for wanting the pinyin is this: I have no confidence in using the English names for the CD titles, and for the names of the songs; the ANITARIUM website I mentioned above has a CD titled "Ladies" (Anita in white, holding onto bed) but I have seen elsewhere this CD called "Witch Girl", but there is another CD called "Bewitching Girl" (Anita sitting on tiger skin)--which is the correct name? which CD are they talking about? and when talking to Chinese speaking people they may not agree on what the names are in English, and why should they, after all, we don't agree on Chinese names for all our songs and learn them for the convenience of Chinese-speaking people! I don't feel safe in using a name until I have seen it used many times by people who know more than me, and this never happens with any consistency. And I can't really use Chinese characters, to start with I can't type them on the keyboard, I can barely see them on the CD label without magnifying glasses, and the foreign gweilo mind forgets the shape of the character-forms in the time it takes the eyes to move from the CD to the computer-screen looking for a match. When we read text, the letters make a sound in the mind, and the sound sticks in the mind to remember, or think about. But the CD labels have no pinyin, so over the years I just know the songs by track 1, track 4, etc. which makes it difficult to discuss the music with anyone who knows anything. What is really cool is to read the pinyin lyrics while listening to the song, so your mind is prepared to hear the sound an instant before Anita sings it, like getting in position to catch a ball, this is how we learn to read as children, by having parents read out loud to us while pointing at the words in a book. So thank you all again, I never thought I would be doing this. For Dana and all you scholars, I found another online English-Chinese translation "toy"--I haven't used it yet: http://dictionary.reference.com/translate/text.html and here's a page with MANY links to help with writing English: http://dmoz.org/Arts/Writers_Resources/Style_Guides/ I haven't begun to explore this yet--good luck! |

Hi Woodstock, It is one year ago today (your time) that Anita had a press conference about her health condition. I would like to know when she announced that she would have press conference. In other words how did you know it? What was your reaction to hear about a press conference? Also did she ask her friends to come the press conference? Do you know a background story? Some said that she was a weaker person than they thought, because she needed her friends to support her. I disagree but what do you think? When I got the news that she had a cancer, at that time I was not a her fan yet, I blindly believed her that she said she would win this battle. As for me, Anita was a Star of Hope, I thought she was invincible. Sorry if I bring back a sad memory. I miss her dearly. |

Auntie Monzter; Pls do ekeke... more often, to cheer us up. See you after your test AT: Today is Sept 5 in HK, the 1st aniversary day of Anita's saddest press conference. It has been the most miserable year for Mui fans, whole year full of grief. So if you don't mind I will reply your questions tomorrow or days after. Really don't like to recall such sad memory at all. |
|
Woodstock IP: 218.103.249.2 Sep 6th, 2004 - 6:18 PM |
AT: If you read the news section, you would see that she announced the press conference on the day before the press conference to the media, so it was in the newspaper. At the same time the Fans Club called fans to support her. Though I was not a member, I know fans who are members, so they called me to go. So I went to support her, as normally I would go on occasions when she needed support. As for how did I feel or my reaction, please refer http://muipoa.mui-mui.org/pressconf0905.htm , in that report I wrote I had already clearly said what I felt. I don't know the background story. But I believe the paparazzi situation was already beyond control. They waited outside Mui's resident day and night (even my friend living in her neighbourhood accused those paparazzi that they were nuisance to wait for & chase after Mui like that) To avoid other patients in the hospital being disturbed, Mui even missed treatment in hospital. A press conference seemed inevitable, though it was not mandatory to made known her disease to the public, as it was her privacy and she was not performing public duty, she was only a star. I don't think she asked her friends to come to the press conference to support her, they came to support her themselves. At that time she was the chair woman of the Guild of HK Performing Artistes, so besides those friends you know they are close to Mui, many other artistes came to support her too. Mui would never do such a thing as asking them to support her,(I'm confident in saying this, because even for CML, she herself never asked any particular singer to be guest, but they offered to be guests or stand by in case anything really happened.)but not surprising that others came to show the unity among artistes of HK. "Some said that she was a weaker person than they thought, because she needed her friends to support her. " People can say whatever they want to say, but the fact, especial the last 4 months of Mui's life in this world, clearly told us she was a strong person or a weak person. She bravely accepted her death, planned the remaining days of her life, making every day useful and meaningful. Even her last hours in the death bed was an inspiration to us. She is invincible! Her phycical self is gone, but her SPIRIT is in invincible! |

Woodstock and Snoopy, Hi, Yes I'm here. This is great news. Timing is everything. I looked at the HK Postal Authority Website on Thursday the 2nd (because our contact at the HK Postal Authority had said wait until September), and I didn't find anything, so I thought that I'd try around the 15th. Lo and Behold, on the 3rd the Authority posted the news about the singers stamps on their website. I'm in 7th heaven as we say here in the States. Thanks to all of Anita's fans and supporters who sent in petition letters requesting a stamp for Anita. I'm happy that the HK Postal Authority will honor other singing legends as well. Please keep me informed on any ceremonies that they may have for the public unvailing of the stamp designs. I may just try to schedule a trip to HK for that ceremony. Ah Mui I miss you so very much, you're in my thoughts daily. Regards to All Skippy |

Woodstock, In my heart, I'm cetain that other Anita fans sent in petition letters to request a commemorative stamp be issued for Anita, along with fans of the other singers. There had to be more people who wrote, because to get a subject/person nominated for a stamp takes many requests. Also, I think that Ah Mui touched so many people's lives in positive ways (by her Generosity, by her Talent, by her being a Big Sister, by her Caring, and by her Unselfishness),that those people (including me) wanted to memorialize Anita in a manner that would be befitting of a honored person whom they considered a family member. I'm pleased that I'm part of a group of people (actually a family) who love Anita and want to let others come to know her like we know her. I notice that the date of the stamp's issue of Nov. 8, 2005, will be 2 years and 1 day to date that Barbara and I attended Anita's Nov. 7th concert in HK last year on Friday night...now that has to be more than coincidence.....I'll bet someone on the HK Postal Authority stamp nominating committee attended the Classic Moments Concert that night, and it is that person's way of paying tribute to Anita. Skippy: Thanks for telling us your belief, but your statement "There had to be more people who wrote, because to get a subject/person nominated for a stamp takes many requests. " is something I don't like to hear, because personally I would like to believe even no one ever requested for the stamps for Anita, the post authority will still depict Anita on this set of stamps. I'm so excited about this stamp though I'm not a stamp collector, it is because I take this issuance of commemorative stamps for Anita as a recognition of Anita's contribution to the society as a pop legend by the HK government. This actually is the first and so far the only recognition Anita got from the government despite her continuous contribution to the society throughout her life. So the issuance also brought my regret to an end (I can now die without regret), as I always felt unfair for her for not getting any recognition. Sorry Skippy, I brought such a stupid question to you. Actually it is not really important how the Post Authority chooses and decides the subject/person to be depicted on the stamp, and not my main concern at all. BTW, just for your information, many high ranking officials are great fans of Anita. |

Woodstock, I too, am glad that HK government is going to finally recognize Anita. It is too bad that it had to be after her death, but it is a beginning, and who knows this could be the first of many long delayed honors that will be be bestowed upon her by her Country. Many of us never know how much someone meant to us until after they are gone. You never ask any "stupid questions", only thought provoking ones. Related subject...I know you will probably do this, but just want to remind you..Be sure to buy more than just one first day cover (which actually an envelope with the stamps cancelled with the words "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE". Snoopy can fill you in on how to save and preserve the covers and the "mint" stamps for your region(since she is the stamp collector). If the stamps are not the "self-adhesive" kind with a backing on them, just make sure that you keep them in a dry place where the humidity can't get to the "mint" stamps and causing them to glue themselves even to the special paper that you put "mint" sheets of stamps into. If you put the mint sheets of stamps in a safe, then make sure you open the safe regularly to air it out, otherwise the humid air will accumulate in the safe and the stamp will glue themselves to the special paper even in the safe. I ramble on, so I will close and encourage you as I always have,to keep up your Herculian efforts on the website, and know that I truly appereciate what you have accomplished, and that I will always help you in your efforts, Best Regards Always, Skippy |

Hi Woodstock This is indeed Great News ! My Boss once mentioned that if one wish for something and wish it hard enough, the wish will come thru.(It actually worked, tested many times.) Remember, i was just mentioning to you on 26 Aug 2004 about hoping HK Post will issue official stamps on Anita... Wow... talking about Brain power.... Next wish to come true is to have a full un-cut version of CM concert ( last nite concert ) issue this year-end or on her birthday in october. I've mentioned before,i've a very strong feeling that this will happen, believe me, i've got very good sixth sense.... |

Jack: you can get to the page of order form from the following URL: http://www.hongkongpoststamps.com/hkpo-eng/frame_order_services.htm Laura: You can use US$1.00 = HK$7.80 approximately for guideline. Mui's stamp is of face value HK$5.00, then decide what to order. As for Datestamped First Day Cover and Datestamped Postage Prepaid Picture Card, if you are not a professional stamp collector, "special postmark" will do, it means it is not necessary to order the other 3 types of postmark. |

Beijing 2008 Olympics i just wonder if anyone seen the closing ceremony from athens?what do you think of the 8 minute part by zhang yimou-who said he can shock the world in 8mins! if Mui is around-would she be the best candidate to perform at closing ceremony with her pops like bad girl-ice mountain on fire-crash the ice mountain i m sure the atheltes would love it!! |

Hi, chinafan, welcome! I have watched the closing ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games. I didn't reply you yesterday, because I really wsih some overseas, especially fans of foreign nationalities to talk about the 8 minutes show directed by the internationally renowned director Zhang Yimou, to see if they were impressed by China by this short show. About Anita for the closing ceremony for the Olympic 2008 at Beijing, of course she will be the most ideal performer, because her powerful voice is very suitable for such occasion. Also, she is so far, the best singer who can control the atmosphere of a concert or the sentiments of audience and she is openly acknowledged even by other singers as with the greatest stage style and skill and talent for the closing scene for any occasions. Now all I can say is |

woodstock - you beat me to what I wanted to say about mui in the 2008 olympics! but i'm sure everyone else would agree or say the same thing! sigh ... i miss mui so much still ... have anyone seen Mui performing in the 1988 olympics? |

Chinafan IP: 219.95.9.27 Sep 5th, 2004 - 2:10 AM |
hopefully he will do his best for Beijing 2008a and worked together with some talented foreign event planners--HK being part of China should have a part in the performance and therefore we can suggest hits from old new HK artists too what do you think of the idea? |
